A massive, 5,000-square-foot gourmet food market and restaurant is opening this summer in north Scottsdale.

Gastromé Market — the name is a merging of gastronomy and gourmet — will be “a restaurant, a market and a classroom,” according to co-owner Jenny Le, who added that the space will include a boutique wine shop, cheese counter, foraged specialty produce and cooking classes.

You can get cheese and wine anywhere, but Le and co-owner Tiffany Chavez want to bring white glove service and a curated selection to the food shopping experience in the shop, where many of the products will be sourced from small, women-owned companies.

“We will know the cheese makers and share their experience and products,” said Chavez. “It’ll be products that we really believe in.”

'Arizona is lacking this type of concept'

Co-owners and life partners Le and Chavez moved to Arizona four years ago when Chavez, a physician assistant in pediatric cardiology, was invited to join Phoenix Children’s Hospital.

Before moving to Arizona, Le worked at Formaggio Kitchen in Boston as a financial controller for five years and fell in love with the concept of large-scale specialty food markets where customers can purchase produce, cheeses, wine and pastries from around the world.

Chavez developed a love of high-end specialty foods through Le when they first met in Boston. Le would make beautiful cheese and charcuterie boards and send them to Chavez's workplace at Boston Children's Hospital. “People at the hospital just loved the food,” Chavez said.

After moving to the Grand Canyon State, Le opened her first restaurant, Pho Bowl, with her sister in 2019 in Phoenix.

She loved living in Arizona, but missed specialty markets, like Dean and Deluca or Eataly. “Having lived here for four years, I think Arizona is lacking this type of concept,” she said.

In 2021, the couple decided to change that by bringing their own take on the gourmet supermarket to metro Phoenix with Gastromé.

What to expect at Gastromé Market

The new supermarket opening in the Gainey Ranch Shops plaza on the corner of Doubletree Ranch and Scottsdale roads will be home to a 3,500-square-foot market and a 1,500-square-foot restaurant, which will feature a menu of scratch-made hot and cold entrees that will change daily.

The market will house specialty shops, each of which will be run by a specialist who will be on-site to help educate customers and guide them through the offerings, like sommelier Charlie Fina and private foragers Brian Hedger and Michelle Gasparino from Hypha Foods who are responsible for gathering local and specialty imported produce.

The market will stock high-end specialty items such as olive oils, pastas, spices, sauces, caviar, cured meats, nuts, pastries, honey and jams along with two dedicated specialty cheese cases.

A place to explore and learn

The staff will offer an array of hands-on, in-store classes for up to 20 people at a time, covering topics from foraging to how to build a charcuterie board.

“There’s no stuffiness, intimidation or ‘silly questions’ here,” said Le.

Education is at the heart of this specialty market. "You can come in and grab a quick bottle on-the-go," said Chavez. "Or sit down, have a glass of wine or Champagne and chat with us about everything from food pairing suggestions to our favorite wine varieties."

Chavez and Le hope to inspire and help guide other entrepreneurs with their endeavor.

“If there are young individuals who wish to learn about opening a business, we’d love to pay it forward,” said Chavez. “We want to give. We want people to come to Gastromé and make memories.”

Arizona Renaissance fair 2022 guide: Tickets, discounts, dates

For two years, the Arizona Renaissance Festival fairgrounds in Gold Canyon, about 40 miles southeast of downtown Phoenix, have been bereft of the magic that a 16th-century storybook village brings to the Southwest every year.

But on Saturday, Feb. 5, the village of Fairhaven will reopen with about 2,000 medieval storytellers, sword swallowers, folk dancers, artisans and other entertainers when the Arizona Renaissance Festival makes a triumphant return.

Many fan-favorite acts and, of course, roasted turkey legs will be back at the 50-acre fairgrounds. Here's what you should know about the 2022 fair, including how to get discounted tickets and which acts to look out for.

What days is the Renaissance Festival open?

The fairgrounds open Feb. 5. The fair takes place from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekends and Presidents Day, rain or shine, through April 3.

How much Renaissance Festival 2022 tickets cost

Tickets purchased at the gate are $30 for age 13 and older, $27 for age 60 and older with ID, $20 for ages 5-12 and free for age 4 and younger.

Season passes can be purchased at the box office and cost $95 to $230.

How to get Arizona Renaissance Festival discount tickets

There are several ways to save money on tickets:

Basha's and Food City: Discount tickets are $1 less — $29 for adults, $19 for kids — at Bashas’ and Food City stores across Arizona.

Military discount: Admission for active and former military members is $27 with ID at the box office.

Hall of Frames: This store is offering an online-only discount that can be redeemed by using the code HOFA at https://www.bigtickets.com/events/arizonarenfest/azrf-2022. It is good for one free adult ticket with the purchase of one full-price adult admission on Feb. 4, 6 and 21 only. Get one free child ticket with the purchase of one full-price adult ticket by using the code HOFC. This discount is valid Feb. 26-April 3.

Group discounts: With the purchase of at least 10 tickets, adult admission is $27 and child admission is $17. The organizer receives one free ticket. Must-see performances at the festival

The festival's daily schedule is packed with acrobats, feline performers, folk dancers and fire eaters.

Three jousting matches will take place each day: The princesses' joust is at noon and the princes trot on at 2:30 p.m. The "joust to the death" is at 5 p.m.

Catch the Barely Balanced comedic daredevils "diving through fire, hurling machetes and testing the limits of natural selection" at the Fairhaven Theatre at 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. every day. Their fiery extravaganza begins at 4 p.m.

The Lynx Show, featuring sword swallowing, magic and comedy, takes place at the Carnevale Village at 11:45 a.m., 1:15 p.m., 2:45 p.m. and 4:15 p.m.

The Jamila Lotus Dance Carnivale will show off "feats of balance and daring" at 11 a.m., 1:30 p.m., 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. at the Dancing Pig Pub.

Acrobat Cirque du Sewer's trained rats and cats will perform their stunts at the Rialto Stage at 11:45 a.m., 1:15 p.m., 2:45 p.m. and 4:15 p.m., with a fire cat finale.

Are masks required to be worn at the fair?

According to the festival's website, the ample outdoor space is conducive to social distancing, and mask use is "recommended of all festival visitors."

"Although the Festival is primarily open-air, it also includes enclosed locations such as shops and close seating performance areas. Shopkeepers may, at their discretion, have a mask requirement with entering their shop," the festival's FAQs reads.

"Regardless of vaccination status, properly worn masks are strongly recommended when indoors, in booths and strongly encouraged in the village lanes, audience seating areas, food lines, when approaching service counters, and any crowded areas where social distancing cannot occur."

Coronavirus spread is still considered "high" in every county in Arizona, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's data tracker.

TuSimple completes driverless big-rig truck test in Arizona

That big-rig truck heeding the speed limit and traffic rules between Tucson and metro Phoenix might not have had a human driver operating it at all.

TuSimple Holdings, a public corporation headquartered in San Diego, said it successfully completed an 80-mile run along highways and surface streets, including Interstate 10, from Tucson to a location in the Phoenix area with nobody in the cab.

The company, which has tested autonomous trucks at a facility in Tucson, said the Dec. 22 trial run, conducted at night, was the first involving no human driver in a large commercial vehicle that interacted naturally with motorists on open public roads. Waymo and other companies also have tested self-driving trucks.

No driver, but lots of eyes on road

TuSimple called the Arizona test the "world’s first fully autonomous semi-truck run on open public roads without a human in the vehicle and without human intervention."

However, precautions included a survey vehicle deployed more than five miles ahead to look for hazards or other driving anomalies, another vehicle trailing behind and law-enforcement vehicles following at around half a mile back.

The one-hour, 20-minute trial run started at a railyard in Tucson and ended in an undisclosed distribution center in the Phoenix area. Along the way, the company's Autonomous Driving System navigated surface streets, traffic signals, on-ramps and offramps, made lane changes and dealt with emergency vehicles in open traffic. The test was conducted without remote control or traffic intervention.

More trials ahead but location unclear

TuSimple said its testing program will continue in 2022 but didn't announce any specific upcoming trials on Arizona roads.

"This test reinforces what we believe is our unique position at the forefront of autonomous trucking, delivering advanced driving technology at commercial scale,” said Cheng Lu, TuSimple's president and CEO, in a statement. He said the company is "laser-focused on putting our technology through a rigorous test on open public roads under real-world conditions."

TuSimple has a testing and demonstration hub in Tucson along with operations in Texas, Europe and China. The company claims its artificial intelligence software allows trucks to "see" 1,000 meters away, operate nearly continuously and achieve fuel savings of 10% or more compared to those driven manually. The vehicles also adhere to safe driving practices such as making a three-second stop at stop signs.

Mumbai airport tragedy averted Air India vehicle catches fire video | India News – India TV

A major tragedy was averted at the Mumbai airport on Monday when a vehicle towing an Air India aircraft suddenly caught fire. The incident took place at about 1 pm.

Fire fighting teams at the airport immediately swung into action to control the blaze. The fire was brought under control without any major damage.

The actual cause of the incident was not known immediately.

Speaking on the matter, Mumbai airport PRO said that the incident took place when the pushback trolley was at service of Air India's Mumbai-Jamnagar flight which had 85 passengers onboard.

"The Mumbai-Jamnagar flight has 85 passengers onboard. The fire was brought under control within 10 minutes. There is no harm to any person. All operations are normal," the PRO said.
